From Forest to Future: How Youth in Tribal Areas Are Choosing Entrepreneurship:
For years, tribal youth in Maharashtra dreamed of leaving their villages for jobs in cities. But today, a surprising and beautiful shift is happening — many young people are choosing to stay back and build businesses rooted in their own forests, traditions, and community skills.
A New Kind of Decision
When I visited a small tribal village in Nandurbar, a group of young men proudly showed me their newly started unit for processing Mahua seeds and bamboo crafts.
One of them said,
“We want to work in our village. The forest is our strength.”
This mindset marks the beginning of a new era — youth-led tribal entrepreneurship.
Turning Traditional Skills Into Enterprises
Most tribal youth grew up watching their parents:
-
Collect honey
-
Make bamboo products
-
Use herbs for healing
-
Process Mahua flowers
Now they are adding modern thinking to these traditional skills — better packaging, cleaner processing, and selling directly to markets.
Support Systems Making a Big Difference
With support from:
-
Van Dhan Kendras
-
Skill development training
-
Self-help groups
-
Organisations like Shabari Naturals
Tribal youth are learning how to manage small businesses, maintain product quality, and understand the market.
New Confidence, New Identity
For many young entrepreneurs, running a forest-based business is more than income — it is pride.
A 22-year-old entrepreneur from Palghar said,
“Now I give employment; I don’t look for it.”
This confidence is transforming entire communities.
